World’s Ugliest Dog Dies

Uh … yeah … not much more needs be said. That’s a real dog, not Photoshop’d or anything. God has one hell of a sense of humor.

From the news item:

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Sam, the tiny dog whose hairless body and crooked teeth earned him a reputation as the World’s Ugliest Dog, has died.

The pooch died Friday, just short of his 15th birthday, his owner said.

“I don’t think there’ll ever be another Sam,” Susie Lockheed said, adding: “Some people would think that’s a good thing.” …

Site Changes

I’ve made my WordPress blog the primary site. It’s just so much easier to manage WP and it’s better suited to a single-user site such as this. The old LDU portal is at this address – all the content is still in place.

The Blue Bullet

rsxAs with most guys, I’ve owned a number of cars in my time. For the most part I’ve been happy with them. The cars I really love I gave names. My Merkur XR4ti was known as “The Red Menace.” My first car, a Dodge Aspen with a very warmed over Slant-Six and a hand-built auto-cross suspension, was “Great White” – because it looked like a monster amongst the RX-7′s and Fiats in attendance at SCCA rallye’s and autocrosses.

I never thought my current car would be in that league. After owning a BMW (a 318is and then a 328ci) for ten years I broke down and bought a Japanese car when the economy made me work at home on a protracted basis. But what a revelation this little Acura RSX – “The Blue Bullet” – has been.

“Man of the House” (2005)

Man of the HouseI’m not sure what possessed Tommy Lee Jones to make this movie, but I’m glad he did. Most reviews out there seem to be mildly complimentary at best, most are very negative. It’s not Apocalypse Now, but its a fun and well made movie.

The basic premise is that Jones is a Texas Ranger who must protect five cheerleaders who witnessed a murder. At their house on campus. Yup – no surprises about what’s coming. The girls represent every stereotype you’d expect – except there’s no Asian girl. And the clothes they wear are usually quite revealing. And there’s the expected kind of “character growth”. There aren’t any surprises. Yet somehow this is a movie you don’t mind watching again.

Aces High 2.06

Aces HighHiTech Creations released version 2.06 of Aces High this week. This version introduces some new variants of the Spitfire and Me109, as well as upgrading the cockpits and models to the new standard started with v2.00 of the game. More importantly, there was some significant work done on smoothing and frame rate. Even on my antiquated GeForce4 I’m getting over 70 fps with medium level detail, and no more stutters over enemy fields. Tracking enemy planes seems much better now, and the gunnery even feels more realistic for some reason.

Of the new planes, the Spit XVI is worth a look. It’s the clipped winged version and aspirated for lower altitudes. 4000 fpm climb to 10K, Hispano’s and .50′s and a roll rate comparable to a 190D-9. Only drawbacks are it’s kind of flimsy like all Spits and everyone is flying the thing right now.
