Strange Days

Strange DaysPeople who don’t live in Los Angeles, or California for that matter, often ask me what it’s like out here. Well, there are times I wish I carried a camera around all the time, or had a camera phone. Because the stuff one sees in a week around this city is enough weirdness for a whole year just about anyplace else. And it’s not the overt whack-job channeling George Patton on the street corner. It’s more of a mellow, do-your-own-thing, weirdness.

Here are some things I’ve seen from just the last few weeks.

  • I’m grocery shopping at Trader Joes. This very hassled looking fellow is racing around picking up a few things. He has two cell phones attached to his belt, like six-shooters. Attached to these are two over-the-ear headsets, one per ear. The question isn’t just: “Is that level of technology integration necessary?” … it’s also: “Why didn’t you leave that stuff in the car while you shop

“Kung Fu Hustle” (2005)

Kung Fu HustleThis is not your typical Kung Fu movie, folks. It’s one part classic Chinese martial arts movie, one part The Matrix, one part a Bugs Bunny/Road Runner cartoon, and one part a Sergio Leone spaghetti westerm. And all of these completely disparate influences actually work together very well.

The look and feel and story of the film is very true to the classic films of the genre that came out of China and Hong Kong in the 70′s and 80′s. The same kind of plot, the same focus on “styles” of Kung Fu, the same underdogs and villains and fight of good versus evil. Whether it’s an homage or just a style they went with, it works.

Impenetrable Greed

Lee RaymondUn-be-freaking-lievable. Exxon’s giving Lee Raymond $400M as a retirement package. At a time when the oil companies are absolutely raping America and corporate greed is also sending thousands of jobs offshore never to return, this corpulent swine is getting $400M to retire. And he’s not even trying to hide it. A perfect example of “F U, I’m rich”.

Far be it for me to wish ill on such an upstanding pillar of the business world, but I kind of hope Dick Cheney takes him on a hunting trip.

Exxon Chairman’s $400 Million Parachute

April 14, 2006— Soaring gas prices are squeezing most Americans at the pump, but at least one man isn’t complaining.

Last year, Exxon made the biggest profit of any company ever, $36 billion, and its retiring chairman appears to be reaping the benefits.

Exxon is giving Lee Raymond one of the most generous retirement packages in history, nearly $400 million, including pension, stock options and other perks,

Jack Rabbit, The Movie

jackrabbit.jpgI just finished a little project for a friend; a very typical project for someone living 5 miles from Hollywood. My friend has been working on an Indy film and needed a web site. They had “something” put together which I souped up and cleaned up so that it still had a “rough” Indy look, but it was still crisp and professional. I also installed Exposé 4 to run all the image galleries.

If you play online games you know the term. And you know the kind of behavior you run into. This site is a hilarious Flash movie which so accurately depicts it. (Rated R for language and violence.)
