Aces High 2.06
HiTech Creations released version 2.06 of Aces High this week. This version introduces some new variants of the Spitfire and Me109, as well as upgrading the cockpits and models to the new standard started with v2.00 of the game. More importantly, there was some significant work done on smoothing and frame rate. Even on my antiquated GeForce4 I’m getting over 70 fps with medium level detail, and no more stutters over enemy fields. Tracking enemy planes seems much better now, and the gunnery even feels more realistic for some reason.
Of the new planes, the Spit XVI is worth a look. It’s the clipped winged version and aspirated for lower altitudes. 4000 fpm climb to 10K, Hispano’s and .50′s and a roll rate comparable to a 190D-9. Only drawbacks are it’s kind of flimsy like all Spits and everyone is flying the thing right now.
The Spit VIII isn’t shabby either, but I prefer the crisper roll rate of the XVI model over slightly better turn rate. Still, the VIII is a fine option when ENY kicks in.
The new 109′s are nice – the G14 and K4 climb like maniacs. It reminds me of the old 109K from Air Warrior many, many years ago. Climbed like a raped ape. But I just can’t get comfortable with teh restricted view in the 109. It’s so easy to lose sight of the enemy with the cockpit framing.
