40yov.jpgI really wanted to like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin”. Carrell was hilarious on The Daily Show and all the reviews of this movie were that it was the funniest thing in years.

It started out pretty well with some great, and coarse, sight gags. But I don’t know. It somehow got too serious in there. Maybe my expectations were set wrong.

This first half of the movie is great as the main character is breaking back into the dating world. He pretty much crams two decades worth of Dating Hell into as many weeks and it’s pretty funny to watch. But once he gets involved the movie just kind of starts to run out of air. For this kind of subject matter to “work” you really don’t want to be caring about the guy that much.

All that being said, the acting and writing was well done. As bizarre a situation as this was it was all carried off in a believable way. And had I known that it would be a deeper movie than the ads portrayed I’d have probably liked it a lot more.

It’s a good movie whose marketing campaign didn’t really portray well.
