“The Tourist” (2010)

The Tourist

Rating: ★★★½☆

I give this film it’s rating based on style and the watchability of the main characters alone. It’s a beautifully made film, harking back to the classic James Bond kind of feeling from the 1960′s. Everything is bigger than life, all the hotels are amazing, and it’s set mainly in Venice. Jolie’s outfits are amazing and basically nothing was spared on production values. A solid supporting cast rounded it out.

The plot is pretty good and I didn’t really see the ending coming until the last fifteen minutes. Depp played the role of an American tourist caught up in good ole European style international intrigue quite well. And Jolie was acceptable as a super-spy who fell in love with her prey.

On paper, this should have been a great movie.

But … it seems like I always have a “but” … but …

The movie lacked the whimsy that made similar movies – such as Pierce Brosnan…

“Salt” (2010)

Rating: ★★★★☆

It’s been a while since there’s been a good Cold-War spy thriller. Probably because the Cold War ended over twenty years ago. But Angelina Jolie’s latest film, “Salt”, is a solid addition to the genre.

And from there Jolie is doing her best James Bond impression as we try to figure out who’s on what side.

As spy stories go, this one is pretty good. There aren’t a lot of Bond-esque gadgets, yet the story moves along and overall is plausible. The traitors aren’t obvious until the very end and they don’t telegraph the…

“Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (2005)

Rating: ★★★½☆

I really wanted to like this movie.

Like most American men I find Angelina Jolie to be someone very worth watching. And few actresses carry off that “dangerous to be around” mystique quite as convincingly. Brad Pitt is as under-rated an actor as Tom Cruise is over-rated. So right there this had promise. The love triangle scandal didn’t bug me, I work in Hollywood, shit happens – especially with the Rich and Famous.

So I settled in for a quiet Friday night to watch “Mr. & Mrs Smith.” What I wasn’t prepared for was how painfully dull things were at the outset. It wasn’t that it lacked authenticity. They acted very much like a married couple having problems and difficulty communicating. But there was no pace to it. And too many scenes were they were both in frame so you could barely pick up the subtleties of what they were trying to portray.

They did a nice…
